Swedish Krona Currency
Overview
Krona is the national currency of Iceland, Sweden and Faroe Islands. The national currency of Sweden is the most important among these currencies and is known as Swedish Krona. This Swedish currency was introduced in 1873 replacing the riksdaler, the prevailing currency of those times.
Swedish krona is known as ‘Swedish Crown’in French. The Swedish krona is regulated by the ISO 4217 standard with the currency code SEK and the numeric code 752 respectively. Swedish currency is depicted with ‘kr’ and the plural form is ‘kronor’.
Value
Swedish krona is one among the few prevailing currencies in Europe as majority currencies have replaced them by euro. This currency of Sweden is the most dominant currency and ranks the eighth position in being the most traded currencies in the world. This country is a net exporter and is enjoying sustained growth as well as stability. Their currency helps their growth rate in keeping it strong.
The Swedish currency value is based on the economic status of other countries as it is indulged in foreign trade to a great extent. In 1992, the Swedish krona exchange rate was floated.
Sweden denied giving up its currency even when the European continent was establishing common currency in 1997. Even in 2003, the Swedish referendum opposed adoption of euro and is continuing with krona.
The euro
Sweden is asked to enter the eurozone, but in 2003 nearly 56% voters opposed on overall turnout of 80% the euro adoption. The Swedish government stated that adopting euro implies being an ERMII member for two-years and so it chose to stay out of the mechanism of exchange rate thereby providing a loophole formally averting the adoption of the euro and the theoretical requirement.
Sweden’s major parties strongly believe to join in the national interest, but have shown no interest in this issue. These parties have agreed to have the discussion after 2010 general election.
There are chances of a debate in 2010 or even later leading towards new referendum. Polls in 2005-2006 shown 55% opposing and May 2007 poll had 53.8% against and so the new referendum is waiting as per the request for deferral until the 2010 mandate and is respected.
