Lithuanian Litas Currency

Introduction

The currency of Lithunia is Lithuanian litas. It has subunits into 100 centų, such that the singular is centas and the plural is centai. In 1992 the Lithuanian litas was introduced after World War I, and was declared independence, but on June 25, 1993 they were reintroduced. This independence brought a currency exchange from ruble to Lithunian litas. During the period 1994 to 2002, litas was pegged with the U.S.dollar @1 to 4. At present the litas is also pegged to the euro @ 3.4528 to 1.

It was expected by January 1, 2010 that the litas would be replaced by Euro, but owing to the existing inflation rate and economic crisis this has been delayed and postponed for three more years such that the present currency Lithuanian litas will remain until 1 January 2013.

Coins structure

Lithuanian Litas coins are in denominations of centas 1, centai 2 & 5, centu10, 20 &50, litai1, 2 and 5. The Lithuanian coins are made of aluminum, zinc, copper and nickel. The centai 1, 2 and 5 are of aluminum, and the higher valued coins are gold-plated copper, zinc as well as nickel composite.

The diameter of each coin is centas1 is18.75mm, centai is 21.75mm, centai 5 is 24.40mm, centu 10 is17mm, 20 centu is 20.5mm, 50 centu is 23mm, 1 litai is 22.3mm, 2 litai is 25mm and 5 litai is 27.5mm.

Banknotes

Lithuanian banknotes are in denominations 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 litų. The colours of each denomination is different such as Lt1 is pink/grey/beige/blue, 2 Lt is Pink/turquoise, 5 Lt is Purple/ Blue, 10 Lt is Orange/ Blue, 20 Ltis Auburn Red/ Violet, 50 Lt is Grey/ Orange/ Green, 100 Lt is Green/ Teal/ Orange,200 Ltis Aqua/ Blue/ White and 500 Lt is Purple/ Violet/ Burgundy.

The banknotes of 1 Lt are now rarely seen in circulation. The commonly used banknotes are 10 and 50 Lt.
